You know, it bugs the bejesus out of me that people looking for work are such targets for scams. Looking for work is a tough slog, no matter who you are, and the last thing any of us need is to be taken advantage of.
I feel like I just walked towards a well-dressed scam, and luckily avoided it.
Ever heard of George S May? I hadn’t, but they had a posting that intrigued me. I did my usual and checked out their web site and thought.. hmmmm, interesting and blasted off an email with a resume. I did notice something strange on the posting but it wasn’t that far-fetched so I let it slide. They called me and left me a message. My spidey-sense tingled when I heard the message because the person who left me a message did not at all sound like typical people calling candidates for a role. It sounded like… a call centre?!!! Was it an outbound call centre?!!! Natasha left me a 1-800 number to call her back on and her extension. I called her back hoping that I’d catch her just before the end of the day, but unfortunately got voicemail, and so I left her a message.
I got on with the rest of my day/evening, and for some reason, this got under my skin. I kept thinking about this company wondering, just why would a company need what sounded like a call centre to call candidates back? Perhaps HR was just stuck in a call centre sounding environment? It puzzled me.
So, I Googled the company and found George S. May is actively spending a lot of time and effort recruiting… everywhere. My spidey sense continues to tingle and it’s not tingling well. And then, more magical information appears. Now, I certainly understand all companies have disgruntled employees and some may even say a few choice words here and there but this is on a completely different scale.
Either someone is spending a lot of time/effort posting similar (yet different) sounding stories about ‘how it works’, or the truth comes out. I think it’s the latter. My favourite post has fodder from 2006 right up until now, which if it was doctored, then was done extremely well. The gist of it all is that the company scams small-medium sized companies through their ‘consulting’ services, AS WELL as scamming candidates into becoming employees.
Somewhere I also read that Natasha (from recruiting) is also a commissioned sales person and will say anything to get candidates to go out to training at head office in Park Ridge, Illinois. Now if Natasha does call me back tomorrow, I’m actually not sure what I should do. Do I play along and see what additional information I can get from her, or do I just say no thanks and hang up the phone and hope there’s better things in store for her?

play along and have a laugh, after all now you know the ball is in your court as they say
It would be interesting to see what you could find out about it all. Especially since you listened to your spidey-sense. Never doubt your intuition, right?
Your instincts were right on. Not only do these folks have a terrible reputation with both clients and employees, but they actively take down free expression sites warning others of them. My company experience is several years old, but the complaints continue.
Don’t even consider this company! They will bleed you regardless if you hire them or they hire you. I lost several thousand dollars chasing around the country for them. The 100% travel required in most positions is reimbursed at a fraction of the cost. They also only provide one way tickets thereby ensuring you can’t easily escape them once you start on a trip. Worst part is what they do to clients. They only care if the client has enough cash or credit to afford a single day of management consulting service. What the unsuspecting don’t know is that single day can cost more than six thousand dollars! By the time the poor business owner gets rid of them, he or she is financially ruined.
In the latested news letters for Nov and Dec, only 4 people are having their 1 year anniversery in the Management Services Dept. They hire in the neighborhood of 700 people annually just in that dept. Do the math.
I have had weeks when you factor in all of the travel and unpaid time spent at the client were in excess of 80. Yet I was only paid for the 35 that I billed for a grand total of $960.
[...] surprised at the number of visits to my post about scamming and the George S May company. Yet the majority of those visitors never look at the rest of my blog. And let’s [...]
u are right, check out http://www.georgesmayscam.com . the got me, and they got me good. there is a place in hell for people like this.
the website was from one of “us” (on the inside) it outlines everything.
glad yer out here.
George S. May not only ruined our business financially, they ruined my husband. I cannot help but think one of the reasons my sweetheart took his life was due to the financial pressures of George S. May. They are now suing me for the unpaid balance, and my husband is dead. I pray every minute for the strength and resources to hold them accountable for the ruin they have created for so many.
George S May ripped my company off too. They misrepresented at their sales presentation and small companies just do not see this coming. They say they are going to help you and they just help themselves to bill at 10 hours per day time 2 or 3 people working to just write more and more reports and recommendations and overbilling for no results. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING AND GET THEM OUT-CALL THE POLICE IF YOU HAVE TO.
I am so sorry for your loss Lynette. I pray for your peace and please know this was not your fault but George S May’s fault. I thought I was smart but fell for it too.
Yes, George S. May International is a bad, bad outfit. Watch out, they will see this Post and try to shut it down. The really sad part is they have been in business for over 80 years. Heaven knows how many they have screwed.
George S. May is a private company and has been since its founding. I’m not sure how active the May family is with the business these days, but can tell you “George” is having a hard, hard time. They are spending almost as much time trying to block information regarding the horrible treatment of clients and employees. Thanks Daisy, for providing another forum that allows those who have been abused by these rotten crooks to have their say.
They started saying the cost was $255/hr plus per-diem, at 10 hours a day. That’s some $2600 the first day an you could stop there if you wanted.
Then it was two people the first day, that’s arround $5200.
When asked what was an estimate of the total cost of the program, the guy said 12,000 to 15000.
Then a guy on the phone mentioned a minimun of 100 hours, now is $26,000.
They clearly said:
1. We had not to pay for their trip back. That was paid by the following customer.
2. We could have customer suppurt for ever.
Last friday, they guy working said he would work 2 extra hours on saturday and sunday -fi it was ok with us- so he could finish the 100 hours on tuesday at 1 pm.
Today, he said that he had to wait for his boss, the only one that could end the job.
And I have to pay for his trip here. Yes, was his answer. And it was going to be wednesdy.
Then I came to put my comment here.
My dad owns a small business that has been suffering in the present economic state. Somehow, this company found him and offered an extremely discounted $100 initial consultation. The expected result was a business report. I went with my dad to the meeting the next day where the George S May employee was supposed to present his findings. The session turned out to be one in which the consultant offered no report or analysis, but simply bashed the company, broke everyone’s spirits and then offered his services as a solution.
The next day, a new team was flown in. What consulting firm does this? He didn’t even have time to think it over (or enough time for me to find out the true story). He’s now 2 days into the very expensive consultation. The consultants could only offer ONE reference, who reported that their work was “good” but way too expensive. I’m going to tell him to fire the company tomorrow and cut his losses, I hope it’s not too late…
Stay away from these guys, there are plenty of business consulting firms out there like Deloitte who have a proven track record and do not charge $10000 a day.. Do your research.
I started at GSM in Nov of 2008 and quit after my 2nd week. I had approximately 20 people in my training class. Most quit after the first week in field. We kept in touch via email our first couple of assignments. The following is the emails that circulated that first week out of training. This should give anyone thinking of working here a very good idea of what to expect.
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to let all of you know that I have quit the program. They lied to us regarding the travel. I was told and I quote “This position requires 100% travel Sunday through Friday.”
This is not the case. They are requiring you to be on the road for weeks at a time. The project director they had me assigned to has been on the road for 2 months straight. I cannot be on the road that much. I have a husband and child at home. I agreed to travel Sunday through Friday and that I would be home on the weekends. If I had known that this was not the case, I would have never attended the training class.
Good luck to all of you and I wish you the best.

Emails continued:
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to drop everyone a line an see how it’s going. I am now at the airport in Memphis debating whether to accept the next assignment or go home. I was at a dump that services trucks. When we presented our first invoice for $13,000 the owners freaked. Needless to say the project was promptly shut down and we could only get a partial payment of $2,000. We actually gave them over $100,000 of cost savings and revenue enhancement recommendations, but they don’t have they money now. Good job survey analyst!
Anyway, this was my PD’s first assignment. He has only been with GSM for 3 weeks and has only been on 3 other assignments. One was a week long one 3 days long and the the other was a 1 day check up. He resigned from GSM today.
FYI he said he was instructed in training to tell us that he has been with the company for several months and has had a few assignments as a PD under his belt. However, it was painfully obvious that this was first assignment.
Hope everyone is having a better go of this than I am.
I’m starting to see a pattern here. I’m actually at home because my job also closed down after one day. Both me and my PD worked yesterday for free. He told us at 5pm on monday that he couldn’t afford us another day and gave us the letter. Due to the crazy closing process, we were there all day yesterday trying to pull at least 13K in hard savings. Most of our day 1 recos were revenue enhancement because they will be lucky to have 400K in revenues this year and have no salespeople. We got everything in order with 60K in savings and finally by about 4PM yesterday all that was left was the call from client care. My PD sent me to the airport to await a new assignment and he would wait with the client for the customer care call. You can guess that client care never called and so my job is still not “closed”. Luckily my PD lives in xxxx so he was happy to stay and close it as it got him another night at home. I called a SENEX after waiting in the airport for a while which is when he told me the job hadn’t closed and technically I should stay until morning to get it closed. But he asked where my home was and said he’d call me back with travel. They didn’t have any jobs for this morning so he sent me home with instructions to call in this morning. I’m not sure what to think about it all and I’m just glad to be home for a day since I’m not getting paid anyway.
The client reluctantly paid the day 1 fee of $6650. By credit card no less. If we’d stayed there for a week we would have buried the company with our fees. They had 5K in the bank and 15K or so in credit card availability.
My PD was also in PD training last weekend and with the company only 3 weeks and he’d never been on a job that lasted more than 3 days. He’d spent the first several weeks bouncing between several jobs in Hawaii under our beloved Mr. Gxxxxx.
The actual work is fun, but there is no way GSM should have accepted the job. I’ll readily admit I could not morally justify pushing to stay there longer. We could have really helped but we would have left him without the working capital to run the biz.
I’m going to try a few more under the assumption that they were accepting jobs that they normally wouldn’t because there were so many of us. But if it doesn’t get any better in the level of job then I won’t make it.
Is anybody having a positive experience with a job lasting more than 2 days?
More emails:
I’m on my 3rd day and pressing to give the client value before we close today. She can’t afford us as well. We presented an invoice but she doesn’t have the money. To top it off, the salesperson bounced her a check which pissed her off.
After we realized she didn’t have the funds, they flew a second staff into here to work 1 day. Plane ticket and rental car over $1000 for 1 day. We’ve got to find a way to do better by the clients.
My concern is being home on Friday.
I am learning that the picture painted during training is not what’s out in the field. We may not get home for weeks. My job on Monday was with a law firm in xx. This job was to run for 250hrs but we were booted out after the first day. Although the owners were pleased with our work, they decided they could make the necessary changes without GSM. The very next day, my PD presented an invoice in the am for 13k, but we did not leave until 5:00pm. This was because we could not leave until released by GSM. Meanwhile, the PD was trying to muscle the owners into paying the invoice in full. I can’t tell how bad the tention was building. By 2:00pm, the owners kept asking “Why are you still here.” By this time, I’m totally embarassed. My PD asked me if I’d ever heard the term “beached?” My response was “No”, we did’nt learn that term in trainning. He said “beached” is when the owners kick you out and you have to stay in your cars on the premises until the next day to collect your money, and if you leave it’s automatic dismissal.
Today, I had to checkout the hotel and wait for my next assignment, now I’m sitting @ the Panera Bread co.
I’m wondering if there is anybody out there that’s lasted 6 months.
Dear Classmates,
Hello everyone.
Here is my story. I left Chicago for XXXXXXXX on Sunday night. I met with my newly appointed PD on Monday morning. He was very nice and explained the opening process which was very similar to our understanding.
We went to the client’s office and met with his wife. The owner did not show up for the opening meeting. The owner came in about 2 hours later & asked us to leave immediately. We were able to get him to relax and showed him a few analysis and reports. I prepared the 207 financial report. They only have $8,000 in the company bank account and $400 in their personal account. They admit they need help, but claim that they were told they could pay $2,000 for one day (1 rep) and in a few weeks have request (1 rep) come back for one day. We gave them an invoice for over $7k for Monday and received a wire for $2k by the end of the day. The company told them they signed a contract and owe them all of the money from the contract. The company demanded that the PD & I go back to the client on Tuesday morning and
give them another invoice for the day. We did.
We left the client’s office around 8:15am. The balance of the day was spent driving around xxxXXX. By 4:30, I was sitting in the airport waiting for another assignment. I called my SENEX at 5:30 and was told to call back in one hour. I called back at 6:30 and was told all of the jobs were given out & to get a hotel for the night. I called today & was told to wait for an assignment. I guess I will be sitting in the airport all today again… Either way I will be going home by Friday.
PS. MY TnE is still not fully functional. I called and left 2 messages.
Good luck to all. Regards,
It’s unfortunate that it did not work out for you. On my second day in Charlottetown, the client pulled the plug. I am in a different place than you. I sold my house this past Spring, I was divorced in 1992, and five years ago my cat died . So, the road is the place for me.
I wish you all the best, it’s better to have tried and decided otherwise than to regret not having made the effort.
Best of Luck,
I’m on my 3rd day and pressing to give the client value before we close today. She can’t afford us as well. We presented an invoice but she doesn’t have the money. To top it off, the salesperson bounced her a check which pissed her off.

My concern is being home on Friday.
Hi,
I’m sitting in the parking lot waiting to be released as well. I’m hoping for a new assignment.
I may have put myself at risk. I called the SENEX and told him I expected to be home by Friday. I told him I’m a single dad with someone else watching my child. He asked if I wanted to leave today? I said no, just getting out front of Friday’s travel. He said to call him back on Friday.
I said, that would be too late. We needed to discuss it right now. Friday would have me waiting in a rental car or airport and that’s not acceptable to me. He said he’ll call me back. (which he hasn’t up until now).
He also asked that i cut 4 hours off of the invoice. I told him he was stealing from my daughters college fund and I wasn’t doing it. My frustration is that we only “make money” when we’re billable, yet they are not responsible for respecting our time.
Enough of my bitching. I have a deliverable to complete.
xXXXXe and I are sitting in the Panera Bread and anjoying the free internet and the nice food. The Senex just called and let us go home. I’ll drive XXXX to the airport and drive back to Miami….5 to 6 hours…Well, at least we will be home some time tonight…
Good luck to everyone and keep in touch…
I just talked to Mr. Senex as well and there is nothing for tomorrow. At least I’m home so it’s easier to swallow not getting paid.
I’m okay with being home. I’d rather be sitting around at home than working for free at a client that should never have been a client. My hope is that the rash of early closings this week will translate into some increased standards of jobs accepted. I wonder if they were accepting bad jobs because they had so many of us.
I’m going to be patient for 1-2 more jobs to see if this crap is the exception or the norm.
Well, I will also add to the negative aspects of working for GSM. My client is also about to go bankrupt and would only pay $5000 for our services. Had two GSM people not gone to help him, he would have gotten value out of our services. We stayed two days, but only billed for one. He gave us a promissory note for the first day. As his bank account is full of NSF, I am sure he won’t pay. I was close enough to XXXXXXX, so instead of getting a hotel, I rented a car and drove home. I figure I will try two more jobs and see if we are all given bad jobs, because we are new. My PD was a new PD and had only been with the company since Aug. and said he had been on good projects, except two.
Lucky you, we were sitting on the road in front of the client’s place until they sign the letter of satisfaction and we’ll be released. Then the client called the police to get us off the road in front of his place, we are at the MacDonald’s awaiting release. It’s better than spending time with the RCMP down at the station!

(Note: Mr. Lindsey was contacted by GSM on 11/18 and removed most of the posts. He must have had the shit scared out of him).
I have not gotten a call from GSM other than from the Senex asking if we had left the initial job. I haven’t asked for authorizations, I really don’t want to call them. I made up an authorization and submitted it. I had to
do a one way submission; figure, the T&E didn’t work.
The project I was assigned to turned out to be really interesting. There are two other SE here and they are working the weekend and until Tuesday next week. I really hate to leave because there is still so much to be done. But, three SE’s is too much for company to pay. NO issues with payments. My SENEX told me I would get a call on Saturday for next assignment. Sorta … disappointed, flying from Edmonton, Alberta I leave here at & 7:00 PM – overnight at Calargy and then to Detroit arriving at about 3:00PM. I am an hour from the airport so it is likely that I will be home less than 24 hours .. not good. Oh well, guess that’s what I signed up for.
This job and the people are great. I’ve sure learned a lot. Initially it looked like the project was going to end on Tuesday but our PD, saved the project.

K
. I haven’t answered any previous email because we are so busy. We are work way more that 10 hours a day, but of course can bill only for 10 days. Client did agree to weekend overtime which is really expensive.
I’m working on a 210 hours job in Wisconsin since Tuesday. We have another 100 hours for next week.
Hi Y’all,
Well, I’m at the hotel restaurant succumbing to the fine Maritime food & hospitality. I drove down from xxxxx this afternoon in about 3 1/2 hours with a stop for lunch. I called and left a message with my PD early this afternoon and still no response. I hope it does not turn out like xxxxx last Friday, I drove 4 hours to get there to find out that the job was cancelled and the GSM people had checked out of the hotel that morning and left. I suppose no one thought to call my cell and let me know. It was a nice way to spend the day, 4 hours there and 3 hours return(I drive faster to relieve stress).
But, this time at least, I have a room.
I Think THese Emails say it all.
I feel sorry for anyone who has hired or been an employee of George S. May. Tex was threatened for simply reporting the experiences of a single class of GSM victims. This was an entire class, not just the inputs from a single or couple of folks who couldn’t cope with the job. Rather than taking action to correct and improve the condition GSM chooses to shoot the messenger. GSM deserves the loss of business and complete disrespect they receive on sites like “Jobvent and Jobbite.”
The only way that GSM employees will ever be treated fairly is to orgainze. We need a Union to get the pay and respect we deserve. The Office and Professional Empolyees International Union will represent us. Contact them @ http://www.opeiu.org/ContactUs/tabid/100/Default.aspx
The Union should help us better serve our clients as we won’t have to engage in unethical (if not criminal) behavior.
An organized workforce for GSM? Great idea, but dead before it could get started. Simply put, GSM depends on the churning of employees to survive. They get poor bastards to work for nothing for a few weeks then replace them. Try to find any other company that trains ten times the number of actual employees each and every year. As long as there are folks to sign up the game never changes.
I spent several years in the George S May International Company, rising to significant management leadership responsibilities. However, I really do not want to be identified as I am ashamed of the kind of person I became in order to stay as one of their sales and management employees for all the years that I did. Reading what others have gone through with GSMIC has brought back the nightmare of working for them with hot tears of shame for letting them do to me what they did to me, and my deep regret and sorrow for what I, in turn, did to others. Joining them was perhaps the second worst decision I made in my life, and if so, staying with them was first, as it became the professional and moral equivalent of suicide.
Just like so many others who have written here, I was tricked into the May Company when adversity had struck my family when I lost my executive position due to downsizing. It was a time of recession in my industry and many of the opportunities I thought I had elsewhere had simply dried up. My many contacts and associates were powerless to find a place for me, as their own companies and organizations were on the same cliff edge. That is when I interviewed with the George S May International Company and was offered “the chance of a lifetime.” My desperate situation and deteriorating financial position blinded me to the evidence that was before my eyes…any port in a storm, so to speak. I panicked.
I am not going to repeat the detailed accounts about the manipulation and abuse at every pore and core of GSMIC, written so eloquently here by so many other victims. What has been said about the fraudulent way they operate is true, entirely true. In fact, it would be difficult to exaggerate the grinding intimidation that is the systemized standard operating procedure in each of the company’s divisions, at every entry level and management position below that of the President. I know, for I was there, and done that, perhaps even to some of those who wrote here, as I was done to, before, during, and after. The closest analogy I can come up with for what happened to me is how concentration camp inmates could be corrupted to serve their tormentors as Kapos, in order to have a chance to live another day and perhaps an extra scrap of bread. As I write this I bow my head in pain and shame.
After the initial brain-washing “training,” as time when by, I was compromised first by good intentions, then by expediency, and finally corrupted by fear. For awhile I told myself that I was helping people, that the end justified the means, but truthfully, I knew all along, in my heart, that I had become a manipulating liar, first to my clients, then to those I recruited, and finally to everyone else. It cost me my integrity, my self respect and even my family, as I changed from the man I once was into the May company man I became. So, as you can read into this, it was not just the George S May Company’s fault, it was mine, for they could not have bought me for any price had I not placed myself on the slave auction block. I fell into their hands. The May Company is expert at taking any possible weakness that can be found in people, whether they be clients or employees, and manipulating them into doing their bidding. It is absolutely uncanny how corrupted and corrupting they are. It starts with the slogan written on all their walls: What does the client want?
I hope, I trust, and I pray that some authority, somewhere, in these United States will read these letters on this site and investigate the George S May International Company and shut it down. It had done enormous damage to the business community and ruined tens of thousands of employee’s lives for over three-quarters of a century. If that does not happen anytime soon, then I hope, at the least, that someone who reads this, either a prospective recruit who will stay away, or even better yet, someone who is trapped within, will be given enough courage to walk out, ask God for forgiveness and healing, and walk away. I did, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. Come outside, the weather is beautiful, even when it is raining, if you have a clean conscience. Redemption lives.
In summation, the George S. May International Company is, without a doubt, one of the worst and dishonourable business organizations in the world. Please believe me. No matter how bad off you are, no matter how desperate you feel, please be absolutely certain, that if you hire them, or work for them, things can and most likely will, become a whole lot worse. Take it from one that knows. Run.
Thanks for writing all your comments. I just kicked out one of the GSM reps. I told her confidential information behind closed doors and she told an employee very detailed information about me. She (Amy GSM employee) is a psycho! It is a scam. She had access to my quick books–I am scared. She told me she has survived 9/11–she was one of four employees in the company that made it out alive–she seemed like a liar. So I called the main office and asked her to leave. Does anyone know if they still from your bank accounts?
She most likely was and is a liar, but she was just doing things the George S. May way. Let Eleanor’s experience warn those considering a George S. May Survey… DON’T! Why would you trust your most sensitive information with someone you just met? Oh, by the way… That half a million Bond they all claim they operate under. It is worth less to you than the Survey you are getting taken by! It hurts to see so many screwed by George S. May. Please, spread the word about this Scam Company. They have damaged too many and need to be stopped.
